Travel from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga on a private 3-day desert tour through the High Atlas Mountains, ancient kasbahs, dramatic valleys, and southern Morocco’s oasis landscapes.
This 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is designed for travelers who want the comfort and flexibility of a private vehicle while experiencing some of Morocco’s most remarkable scenery. Cross the High Atlas Mountains, visit the UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou, spend a night in the Dades Valley, walk through Todra Gorge, and continue to Merzouga for a sunset camel ride and an overnight stay in a desert camp.
With your own vehicle and driver, the journey can be adapted to your pace, allowing more freedom for scenic stops, photographs, and breaks along the way.
Your private desert tour begins with pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech.
Leave the city behind and travel southeast toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs through mountain scenery, traditional villages and panoramic viewpoints before reaching the Tizi n'Tichka Pass.
Because this is a private tour, stops can be made along the route for photographs, refreshments and scenic views.
Continue toward Aït Ben Haddou, one of southern Morocco's best-preserved fortified villages and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Built using traditional earthen architecture, the ksar rises above the surrounding valley and provides an excellent introduction to the historic architecture of southern Morocco.
Take time to explore the village and walk through its narrow passages before continuing toward Ouarzazate.
After lunch, continue through Ouarzazate, often described as the gateway to southern Morocco.
The journey then follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs toward Skoura and the Valley of Roses, where the scenery changes between palm groves, cultivated valleys, traditional villages and rugged mountain landscapes.
By late afternoon, arrive in the Dades Valley, where you will check into your hotel.
Enjoy dinner and spend the night in the valley.
Overnight: Dades Valley boutique hotel

After breakfast, continue deeper into southern Morocco.
The morning begins with views of the dramatic formations and winding roads of the Dades Valley before traveling toward Tinghir.
Arrive at Todra Gorge, known for its towering rock walls and narrow canyon.
You will have time to walk through the gorge and enjoy the contrast between the limestone cliffs, riverbed and surrounding oasis.
Continue through the landscapes of southeastern Morocco toward Erfoud.
Pass through Erfoud, a town known for the fossils found throughout the surrounding region, before continuing toward Rissani.
Rissani has long served as an important trading center in the Tafilalt region and remains known for its traditional market.
Depending on the day and your interests, stops can be arranged along the route before continuing toward Merzouga.
By late afternoon, the landscape changes as the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.
Arrive near Merzouga and prepare for one of the highlights of the journey: a camel ride into the dunes.
Ride across the sand as the late-afternoon light changes over Erg Chebbi.
Depending on conditions and timing, stop among the dunes to enjoy the sunset before continuing to your desert camp.
On arrival, settle into your tent and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Sahara.
Dinner is served at camp, followed by an evening in the desert. Traditional music around the campfire may be offered depending on the camp and conditions.
Spend the night beneath the desert sky.
